When Progress Becomes Control:

History repeatedly shows the same pattern: an initiative begins with a promise of protection, liberation, prosperity, health, or security. It may produce real benefits, yet gradually become absorbed into a larger architecture of bureaucracy, dependency, commercial power, surveillance, or control.

1. The Welfare State:
The welfare state was created to protect people against poverty, illness, unemployment, and social exclusion. It brought genuine security to millions. Yet parts of the system gradually developed into enormous bureaucratic structures in which rules, documentation, and institutional procedures could become more important than the human beings they were meant to protect.

Protection then risked becoming dependency, while assistance became increasingly tied to monitoring and compliance.

2. Benefits and Income Support:
Benefits and subsidies were introduced to make housing, healthcare, and childcare affordable. Nevertheless, increasingly complicated regulations, aggressive fraud prevention, algorithmic risk selection, and institutional distrust created new forms of injustice.

The Dutch childcare-benefits scandal demonstrated how a system created to support families could turn against them. Citizens were treated as potential fraudsters, automated suspicion replaced human judgment, and institutional self-protection overruled compassion.

3. The War on Drugs:
The War on Drugs was presented as a campaign to protect society against addiction and crime. In practice, it also strengthened illegal markets, organized crime, mass incarceration, militarized policing, and the criminalization of users.

A policy promoted as public protection thus helped create the conditions for a permanent security apparatus—while the deeper social, psychological, and economic causes of addiction often remained unresolved.

The promise was protection against famine. The long-term result, however, also included monoculture, declining biodiversity, soil depletion, water extraction, chemical pollution, and the disappearance of traditional seed varieties.

When many local crops are replaced by a small number of uniform varieties, the food system may become more efficient—but also more vulnerable to disease, ecological disruption, supply-chain failure, and corporate concentration.

Social media promised to connect humanity, give everyone a voice, and allow information to travel freely across borders.

Its commercial model, however, was built largely around attention, engagement, data extraction, and behavioural prediction. Platforms discovered that emotional provocation, fear, outrage, and division could keep people engaged longer than reflection and social harmony.

Connection became addiction. Communication became behavioural data. The public square became an invisible laboratory for psychological influence.

11. Algorithms, AI, AGI, ASI and the New Dependency:
Algorithms and artificial intelligence are introduced in the name of convenience, efficiency, objectivity, safety, and liberation from repetitive work. They can improve medicine, education, science, communication, and countless other fields.

Nevertheless, AI can also automate existing prejudice, centralize knowledge, monitor populations, manipulate behaviour, and make citizens dependent upon systems they cannot inspect or challenge.

AGI may begin as an assistant and gradually become the infrastructure through which people work, study, communicate, receive healthcare, access financial services, and participate in society.

The greatest danger may therefore not be a suddenly hostile machine. It may be a helpful system that becomes so deeply embedded in civilization that participation is no longer genuinely optional.

12. The Geopolitical Shadow of Superintelligence:
This historical pattern now reaches its most consequential stage.

International AI initiatives are publicly presented as instruments of peace, cooperation, development, safety, and the closing of the digital divide. Behind that language, however, governments, intelligence agencies, technology corporations, financial institutions, and defence contractors understand that advanced AI could become the strategic nervous system of the twenty-first century.

Intelligence services can use shared digital infrastructure to collect data, map populations, monitor communications, predict political behaviour, and influence entire societies. The military-industrial complex (MIC) sees AI not merely as an economic instrument, but as an architecture for cyberwarfare, autonomous weapons, intelligence analysis, strategic prediction, information control, and military superiority.

The historical influence of royal houses and Crown institutions, wealthy dynasties, banking networks, philanthropic foundations, multinational corporations, universities, churches, intelligence agencies, sovereign wealth structures, and defence industries must therefore be investigated with precision. 

Families and institutions associated with immense wealth—including the Rockefeller and Rothschild networks—have exercised different forms of historical influence. But their actual power must be demonstrated through ownership, investments, grants, contracts, board memberships, lobbying, institutional partnerships, and political relationships.

The Rockefeller family is historically Protestant, while the Rothschild family is Jewish. Their influence should therefore not be described as collective “Jewish control.” Religious or ethnic identity is not evidence of coordinated power. The subject of investigation must be the documented architecture of finance and institutional influence—not an entire population.

The central danger is institutional capture.

Just as agriculture, medicine, welfare, education, the internet, and social media were absorbed into larger systems of commercial and governmental power, AI cooperation could be captured by actors pursuing surveillance, centralization, military advantage, financial dominance, or technocratic control.

• Who ultimately controls the transition from AI to AGI and superintelligence (ASI)?

AI will not automatically dismantle the old architecture of power. If built upon the same foundations, it may amplify that architecture beyond anything previously possible.

Humanity must therefore establish independent oversight, distributed governance, transparent financing, public accountability, cultural pluralism, technical safeguards, and an ethical foundation beyond the exclusive control of state, corporate, financial, dynastic, royal, military, intelligence, or religious powers.

The next great promise of human progress must not become the most powerful architecture of control ever created. A forewarned humanity is forearmed.

AIIOS and WAICO: An Offering from the Global South of the Spirit:
